StarBand was the first to market with a two-way broadband VSAT service for home users in 2000, and the Nova product line returns StarBand to a highly competitive position as the "professional's choice" in the growing broadband VSAT market.

StarBand Nova services include three options Nova 500, Nova 1000 and Nova 1500. The Nova 500 is an economical option designed for customers that want a basic Internet service at a cost-effective price.  The Nova 1000, aimed at small office/home office (SOHO) users, offers always on broadband Internet access at speeds of up to 1 Mbps download and 128 kbps upload. The Nova 1500, aimed at small business users, offers speeds of up to 1.5 Mbps download and 256 kbps upload.

All of the services utilize the advanced Gilat SkyEdge VSAT platform, and are available for $0 including equipment* and standard installation. The equipment is also available for purchase at a price of only $199.99 plus tax, shipping, and dealer installation. For more information about the new StarBand Nova www.starband.com.

The StarBand Nova services — Nova 500, 1000 and 1500 — offer reliable, high performance, always-on broadband satellite Internet for residential, small office/home office (SOHO), telecommuter and small business customers. The latest Nova services offer faster speeds than previous generations of Nova services and value-added features!

The Nova modem is the first consumer grade satellite modem with a native 24VDC or 120VAC power input making it the perfect modem for remote solar off grid applications. It uses a low 2.8 amps @ 24VDC (actually that's only it's name plate rating it uses a lot less than that, especially when idle and not transmitting).

The Nova Equipment includes the standard hardware (.75 Meter Dish, a fixed trimast mount, feed arm (ODU and LNB), and modem). If the StarBundle offer is selected, there is no charge for the equipment* and standard installation. There is a monthly recurring charge (MRC) plus a monthly bundle service fee. If purchased, there is a one time cost for equipment and a monthly recurring charge (MRC). StarBand will bill your credit card directly for monthly charges. Or monthly paper billing is also available, however a credit card is necessary to set up your account.

A summary of the plans follow.

Is Satellite Internet For Me?
Satellite Internet systems are an excellent option for people in rural areas where Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) and cable modem connections are not available. A satellite installation can be used even where the most basic utilities are lacking, if there is a generator or battery power supply that can produce enough electricity to run a desktop computer system. The two-way satellite Internet option offers an always-on connection that bypasses the dial-up process. In this respect, the satellite system resembles a cable modem Internet connection. But this asset can also be a liability, unless a firewall is used to protect the computer against hack attempts.

In a two-way satellite Internet connection, the upstream data is usually sent at a slower speed than the downstream data arrives. A dish antenna transmits and receives signals. Upload speeds are nominally 50 to 256 Kbps for a subscriber using a single computer. The download occurs at speeds ranging from about 500 Kbps to more than 1.5 Mbps, depending on factors such as Internet traffic, the capacity of the server, and the sizes of downloaded files

The nature of the satellite connection is good for Web browsing and for downloading of files. Because of long latency compared with purely land-based systems, interactive applications such as online gaming are not compatible with satellite networks. In a two-way geostationary-satellite Internet connection, a transaction requires two round trips between the earth's surface and transponders orbiting 22,300 miles above the equator. This occurs in addition to land-based data transfer between the earthbound satellite system hub and the accessed Internet sites. The speed in such a connection is theoretically at least 0.48 second (the time it takes an electromagnetic signal to make two round trips at 186,000 miles per second to and from a geostationary satellite), and in practice is somewhat longer. Satellite systems are also prone to rain fade (degradation during heavy precipitation) and occasional brief periods of solar interference in mid-March and late September, when the sun lines up with the satellite for a few minutes each day. Rain fade and solar interference affect all satellite links from time to time, not just Internet systems.
